The Dirt on Professional SEO Services and Page Rank - 4 Misconceptions

#1: PageRank is the ranking on Google’s search engine.

It isn’t. Simply put, PR is an indication of how important one page is to the Web. Google decides this by calculating the quality and relevance of the links to and from your page.

Before you go yelling to the company that provided your professional SEO services, understand that this doesn’t mean that PageRank isn’t important. It is - just not in the way you may have thought. PR is one of the main tools Google uses to decide your page ranking on the search engine; with the creation and use of Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI), PageRank may become even more important.

#2: PageRank provides ranking for your whole website.

It doesn’t. For that matter, the Google search engine doesn’t rank your entire website, either - one of the many reasons landing pages and site maps are such good tools to use. While some professional SEO services proclaim that they can raise your website’s ranking, in reality, PageRank and Google’s search engine both deal with only one page at a time.

#3: The more links you have, the higher your PageRank.

This isn’t necessarily true. Professional SEO services aren’t lying to you; it’s possible to raise your PR with a large number of links. However, a high amount won’t mean anything if the sites you’re linking to have low PR values. This is pointed out especially well in the case of websites that only have a few links, but the linked pages are relevant, high quality and have a high PR value.

#4: Any link is a good link.

Not true and believing this can actually damage your PR. Google decides PR by “votes”. When someone links to your page, it’s a positive vote. However, Google also takes into account that page’s PR; the higher the PR, the more that page’s vote counts.

That goes for pages you link to, also. Some professional SEO services don’t pay attention to the PR of those pages, when they most definitely should. An outgoing link from your page to a PR0 page can very well get you penalized. Link farms are a bad idea because of this; Google either ignores the links or penalizes you for them.

If this system seems unfair, look at it this way: If a hospital were trying to decide the best way to perform a surgery procedure, whose opinion should count more - the surgeon’s or the janitor’s? Would you have that surgery if you knew a janitor decided how it was done?

While PageRank is important, be wary of the SEO providers that shout it. Ask the companies how they would raise your PR. Make sure their professional SEO services include a comprehensive layout of the campaign strategy, and keep in mind that the bottom line isn’t, “How do I raise my PR?”, but “How do I get more conversions?”

When you build links to your site you have to make sure that you keep in mind that this effects how you optimize your site. These links effect the way search engines see your site and where they place it in the search results. For this reason you need to make sure that you know what you are doing when you are building links.

Do not use words like “click here” or www.xyz.com because you are not optimizing for click here or your sites url which you are already at the top of.

Make sure that the amount of links on the page that your website will show up on is only 2 clicks away from the home page and that there are inder 40 links on that page or that link will be almost useless depending on that sites ranking and PR.

Organizing the links on your site is very important because this is how people will see if your site is worth linking to. webmasters do not want to be on a page that has 70 random links on it. They want to be placed in a nice catagory that people will see and use to visit those sites.

Google Sitemaps: 7 Benefits You Can’t Ignore

Google Sitemaps enables Webmasters to Directly Alert Google to Changes and Additions on a Website and that’s just one of 7 Benefits.

Telling search engines about new pages or new websites use to be what the submission process was all about. But major search engines stopped using that process a long time ago.

Google has for a long time depended on external links from pages they already know about in order to find new websites.

For webmasters and website owners Google Sitemaps is the most important development since RSS or Blog and Ping, to hit the Internet.

Using RSS and Blog and Ping enabled webmasters to alert the search engines to new additions to their web pages even though that was not the primary purpose of these systems.

Besides that meta tags are out of favour with many search engines especially Google, because of abuse.

If talk of search engine spiders leaves you confused, they’re nothing more than software programs that electronically scour the Internet visiting web sites looking for changes and new pages.

How often the search engine spider alias robot, visits your website depends on how often your site content is updated, or you alert them to a change. Otherwise for a search engine like Google they may only visit a website once a month.

As the internet gets bigger every second of every day, the problem for search engines and webmasters is becoming evidently greater. For the search engines it’s taking their search spiders longer to crawl the web for new sites or updates to existing ones.

For the webmaster it’s taking longer and becoming more difficult to get web pages found and indexed by the search engines

If you can’t get web pages found and indexed by search engines, your pages will never be found in a search and you’ll get no visitors from search engines to those pages.

The answer to this problem at least for Google is Google Sitemaps

Whilst still only in a beta phase while Google refines the process, it’s fully expected that this system, or one very similar, is here to stay.

Google Sitemaps is clearly a win-win situation

Google wins because it reduces the huge waste of their resources to crawl web sites that have not changed. Webmasters win because they alert Google through Google Sitemaps what changes or new content has been added to a website and direct Google’s crawlers to the exact pages.

Google Sitemaps has the potential to speed up the process of discovery and addition of pages to Google’s index for any webmaster that uses Google Sitemaps.

Conventional sitemaps have been used by webmasters for quite some time to allow the easier crawling of their websites by the search engine spiders. This type of sitemap is a directory of all pages on the website that the webmaster wants the search engines or visitors to find.

Without sitemaps a webmaster runs the risk of webpage’s being difficult to find by the search engine crawlers, or never being found at all.

Do I need Google Sitemaps if I already have sitemaps on my websites?

Google Sitemaps are different to conventional sitemaps because they’re only seen by the Search Engine Spiders and not human visitors. Google Sitemaps also contain information that’s only of value to the search engine in a format they understand.

Creating Google Sitemaps in 5 steps

1. Create Google Sitemaps in a supported format ( see end of article )

2. Upload Google Sitemaps to your Web Hosting space

3. Register for a free Google Account if you don’t already have one

4. Login to your Google Sitemaps Account and submit the location of your sitemaps

5. Update your Sitemaps when your site changes and Resubmit it to Google

From your Google Sitemaps account you can also see when your sitemap was last updated and when Google downloaded it for processing. It will also tell you if there were any problems found with your sitemaps.

Google Sitemaps can be used with commercial or non-commercial websites, those with a single webpage, through to sites with millions of constantly updated pages. However a single Google Sitemaps file is limited to 50,000 web pages. For websites with more pages, another Google Sitemaps file must be created for each block of 50,000 pages.

If you want Google to crawl more of your pages and alert them when content on your site changes, you should be using Google Sitemaps. The other added benefit is it’s free.

If you’re expecting this special alert process with Google Sitemaps to improve your Page Rank, change the way Google ranks your web pages, or in any way guarantee inclusion of your web pages, Google has made it clear it will make no difference.

Google Sitemaps web pages are still subject to the same rules as non Google Sitemaps pages.

If your site has dynamic content or pages that aren’t easily discovered by following links, Google Sitemaps will allow spiders to know what URLs are available and how often page content changes.

Google has said that Google Sitemaps is not a replacement for the normal crawling of web pages and websites as that will continue in the conventional way. Google Sitemaps does however allow the search engine to do a better job of crawling your site.

The Google Sitemap Protocol is an XML file containing a list of the URLs on a site. It also tells the search engine when each page was last updated, how often each page changes and how important each page is in relation to other web pages in the site.

The Power of Links in SEO

I remember my early days in Real Estate, I was a “tech head”, so I was pushing hard for an online presence. The best way, other than PPC, was reciprocal linking. Reciprocal linking gave me another pathway to my website for the end user. Google wasn’t even close to the powerhouse it is today and other search engine algorithms had a tough time finding sites, unless there were several other sites out there that linked to them. Today it is more important to have “back links” which are one way links instead of the old fashion “link to me and I’ll link to you”.

Any SEO expert should explain a few facts to you about links:

1. Anchor text is important. If you see something that is blue and underlined then you know it is a link to another site, even though it doesn’t say the URL. It’s important that it doesn’t say the URL, it should say what the website is about, because the search engine bots will relate the anchor text to the site and improve the ranking for those keywords.

2. Not all links are created equal. Page Rank (PR) is the simple term used to describe the importance of a Web site. The higher the PR, the more important a Web site is considered to be. A link coming to your site from a PR6 is significantly more powerful than link coming from a PR4 site. It must also be noted that a link from a banned site (bad neighborhood) can actually hurt you.

3. Getting Links can be very tedious. Finding the sites to submit your link to, verifying the link, finding the right category, and writing the text for the links are all time consuming and at times very dull work.

4. Not all links can be seen by the search engines. Image links, javascript links, and other types of links without the proper coding can’t even be read by the search engine bots and therefore won’t help you improve your sites rankings.

5. Quantity vs Quality. I stated above that all links are not created equal, but if you get enough links from sites with low PR’s it may still help you improve your keyword rankings. (just may not be the smartest approach)

6. Natural Links are awesome (sometimes). Natural links are the links you don’t ask for, people create them on their own, either because you have a great site or a terrible one. In most cases natural links are a wonderful way to drive traffic to your site, but you also lose control over the anchor text. For example: A high profile individual gets a bad name and everyone links to the site using the term “idiot” in the anchor text. Unfortunately, their site will likely begin to rise in the search engines for that term.

7. Not everyone wants to link to you. Do you want the front page of your business website full of links to other companies? Neither to other Web sites. Finding the right sites is one of the biggest assets an SEO Company can provide when it comes to proper link building.

Want High Google Rankings? Build it For Humans!

If you want your website to receive lots of free search engine traffic from Google, or any other search engine for that mater, build it as though it was mean for human beings to read. Seriously. The search engines are way too smart for us to waste our time trying to outfox them. Instead, give them what they want.

If people would put as much effort into building a user friendly site with value for its visitors as they do in trying to outfox the engines, they would have what they are seeking…plenty of free traffic. I think part of the problem is that so many people are thinking short term. Folks, it takes time to build organic search engine derived traffic. But then you end up with a nice long-term income.

There are of course a variety of factors that determine how much organic traffic you can obtain that are out of your control. For instance, if you choose a topic that very few people are interested in, it will be very difficult to get large numbers of targeted traffic. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and it may well be a good thing. I have a website about one of my inventions, a selective asparagus harvester. I think that in the United States there are only a few hundred asparagus growers, and hence I expect very few visitors to the site. If only one visitor buys one machine it will be a $100,000 plus sale, and well worth the effort of putting up the site.

What I consider to be one of the most important rules for getting great rankings in the search engine results is that you write for a human, and for the most part, an English speaking human with good grammar and use a spell checker. This doesn’t apply if you are a non-English speaking site, obviously.

The reason should be obvious, if word processing programs can not only check spelling, but check grammar as well. If I was a search engine and I was comparing sites to see who to put on the first page of results, and one site had poor grammar, then that would be an obvious point to consider. Spammy sites are far more likely to have poor grammar and bad spelling than legitimate sites.

A word about keywords; do your research and use one of the online keyword research tools. A common problem with websites is poor keyword research. If people do not search for the keywords then even though you are #1, you still don’t get any traffic. There is no substitute for keyword tools and good research.

Optimize each page of material for one or two keyword phrases. Do not attempt to optimize for single word keywords unless there are some very unusual circumstances. It is far easier to capture multiple word phrases. Where ever you put your keyword phrases, make it sound natural. Don’t use them too often. The engines are watching. Work them into your title tag. If your title does not mention you keywords, then the search engines give it far far less importance. It doesn’t hurt to have some keyword phrases in your image alt tags, and in your description tag.

Use a simple clean layout. In recent patent documents Google brings up the idea of web page clutter being a factor in ranking of web pages. If you make the site design simple and pleasing to the eye, you will have a better chance of a good ranking than if your design is sloppy and cluttered.

Content is of course, as always, king. Great content is an absolute requirement. The better your content the more visitors you will get. Part of great content is lots of it. I like to find the best keywords I can, then put up at least 10 pages of information relating to each set of keywords. By having your keyword phrases in a number of different settings you have a much greater chance of visitors picking your site to visit when they search for those keyword phrases. If your content is poor or your usability is not good, your visitors will “bounce off” of your site and the search engines will notice. If your visitors stay for long periods the engines notice that too.

Another thing that great content will attract is links. Lots of inbound links can do wonders for your ranking. If you have really valuable content the links will find you. It does take time, but it does happen. You can actively seek out and trade links with other appropriate sites. Write some articles and submit them to the article marketing sites. They allow you to include links to your site. You not only pickup links, but the articles will drive traffic to your site too.

Once you have it all put together, then you have to wait. It just takes loads of time to gain Google’s trust. Often I begin getting some search engine traffic within a few weeks of getting a new site up, but then a month or two later my traffic drops to zero. Then after months and months of little or no traffic I begin to get s trickle of traffic and it slowly grows till about two years after publishing it. If it isn’t doing well after two years then you best start changing things and doing testing to see what’s wrong.

Keep improving your site keeping in mind that it is for humans, not search engines. The search engines are getting better and better and finding high quality human friendly and useful sites, so by creating just that type of site, you assure your website’s future.
